Can you believe it? Our Arts Fuel Fundraiser & “Tension” Art Show is tomorrow night at 7 p.m.! We’ve been working hard to spotlight as many of our participating artists as we can, and we hope you are just excited to see their work in person as we are. So without further ado…

Supercell
“This painting was made from a photograph of a thunderstorm cloud in the moments before it developed into a tornado. These storms are result of warm and cool air swirling together. I choose it for the C-4 fundraiser because it felt illustrative of the mixture of feelings I had while embracing a new entrepreneurial spirit. On the one hand, I wanted to stay cool and preserve my artistic integrity, while on the other, I was enraged at the hoops I have jumped through to reach my artistic goals. The Ignite class was a great introduction to the dualities of making a living as an artist, and I felt that this painting summed those emotions up perfectly. Seed
“This work truly represents my artistic style as I have an affinity for nature-inspired themes in my work. The title, “Seed”, is a metaphor for intention. For me, it connotes initiation, potential, and faith. I feel embracing these qualities are essential when pursuing an artistic journey. ‘Seed’ also pays homage to C4 Atlanta as they have been a “seed” of inspiration for myself and many other artists.”

We’ve Got Sculptures, Paintings, and Printed Poetry!

Another happy Monday, everyone! I’ve got to say that I am bowled over by some of the “Tension” art show submissions I’ve seen today. We hope you’re just as excited as we are to experience the artwork we’ll be exhibiting at our Arts Fuel Fundraiser. For your viewing pleasure, we’re previewing some more pieces, and we’ve got everything from sculptures to paintings to printed poetry. So so cool!

“These are pieces for an installation that we are hanging at C4…. These are 5-6′ in diameter and there are over 100 of them. They are made from discontinued slats that are used to make wood blinds. We are covering the area over the co-working space that is 60′ x 47′ and we will also be selling the pieces to take home from the show for $30 a piece. “The poem came out of the Occupy movement moment — a moment of transformative potential where on a large scale, “those fears which rule over our lives and form our silences begin to lose their control over us” (Audre Lorde, “Poetry is not a Luxury”). It epitomized, for me, the tension between our inherently creative, feeling cores collectively birthing that upswell, and the limitations of today’s conditions “within structures defined by profit, by linear power, by institutional dehumanization.” As often happens, I channeled this piece in call and response with the constellation of contemporary and ancestral artists, cultural workers, and community organizers who most speak to my practice. In that moment I was listening, as I also often do, to Nina Simone, and found particular refuge in “Backlash Blues,” penned by Langston Hughes.”

“It seems that I’m always struggling for that next burst of creative energy. The corrupt and fallen world I live in tries its best to rob me of the the inspiration given to me by my Creator. It’s only when I lay prostrate and swallow my pride that I discover that my next creative expression is right beneath the surface… in full color!”

“Of the two in the show, this one, un-Named 16, is my current favorite. Both pieces in the show are from an on-going series developed out of the need to find creative work I could do within the time constraints of the working. I usually always have two art projects active: one that requires large blocks of time to plan, produce and schedule shoots with actors. There can be months between actually producing work. I have an ongoing seires where I go photograph almost every day as a kind of disciplined practice. That necessitates photographing outside of “work” hours – early morning and evening. In this particualr image, the frame is divided in half with the electronic billboard blasting the left side and street lights providing a warm glow for the circle of trees and clearing on the right side. The conflict, or tension, is the need for Commerce and the need for the social circles of friends and family vying for my time.”

Finding the Poetry in Toni Morrison.’ I can’t wait and hope to see folks there.”

We are a collaborative called Voyeur Designs founded by Gina Thompson and Lucas Young. Our installation for the Tension show will be a site-specific sculpture made of re-purposed window blind slats. The piece will be large and cover the space over C4′s working area. I have entered a piece of string art under Voyeur Designs as well.

Introducing ‘Tension’ Artists

C4 Atlanta’s first ever Ignite graduate show will kick off May 11, 2013. The opening reception/fundraiser Arts Fuel will be on May 11, 2013 from 7pm – 10pm. Tickets for Arts Fuel are on sale now.

Opening for ‘Tension’ is May 11, 2013

We wanted to keep the theme of our first show, ‘Tension,’ germane to our mission. For this show, Atlanta artists explore the dual identities of “the artist” and the “business person.”

Many of us can relate to this struggle or tension. In our own lives, we balance work and life, children and relationships, and the pursuit of emotional well being while living in a results-driven world.

The work in ‘Tension’ will range in medium, price and technique. This is a great opportunity to collect from some of Atlanta’s most talented artists. More information about gallery hours to come, but if you want the opportunity to purchase first, please attend Arts Fuel, May 11th. Discounted tickets for arts professionals are available.

Meet the “Tension” Artists!

C4 Atlanta is going to be hosting its first ever art show May 11th, 2013. Entitled “Tension,” it will feature the artwork of graduates from our Ignite program, an eight-week entrepreneurship seminar designed for the working artist.

Kicking of the show will be C4′s Arts Fuel fundraiser event. In addition to some great visual art, Arts Fuel will include entertainment from Dance Canvas, The Extraordinary Contraptions and Serenbe Playhouse. Also, included in the ticket price for Arts Fuel, food from local restaurants and wine/beer.
